These are the books I have been reading over the past several months. Some have great information while others comforted me, distracted me, and made me laugh.

This book is a fun read (I laughed out loud several times). It really had some useful tips and helped me to feel less alone on my cancer journey.

Ms. Moojani’s account of her near death experience filled me with a sense of calm. I also enjoyed being reminded that my main job here on earth is to love and be loved and how freeing it can be to let go of fear.

I love the idea that we can turn our challenges and worries over the divine and let them go. Tasha Silver has a wonderful sense of humor and I had a hard time putting this book down once I got started. I am currently reading another of her books, Change Me Prayers.

This was the first book I read after finding out that I needed chemotherapy. Jackie Buxton has a down to earth way about her that made me feel like I was reading tips from a friend. I liked how honest and open she was about what she was and was not willing to do going forward to stay as healthy as possible.

I find the perspective of this book to be mind blowing and exciting. If we can learn to sit back in our minds and observe our thoughts and emotions, see them as simply experiences we are having, and let them pass through us, we can learn to be truly free. The chapter called “contemplating death” is very inspiring.

Reading good fiction can feel like a vacation from the grind of cancer treatment. I got lost in this book on one of my big couch rest days during chemotherapy. It is the bomb.

This book is fascinating and helped me with some of my fears surrounding death. Dr. Amatuzio shares interesting stories about patients on the brink of dying who have experienced a calm knowing and family members who have interacted with loved ones who have passed away.

I’m not sure I can prevent cancer from returning with food, but why not try? I love that this book has made me want to eat foods I haven’t paid attention to for awhile (especially fruit!). The science behind the healthy foods was more than I needed, but you can tell the authors did their research.

Again, sometimes a girl needs to get lost in a good story. Elizabeth Gilbert is an amazing author (of both fiction and nonfiction). Her authenticity and depth of character shines through in anything she writes.

I am still working on this one. I do believe that we can find great relief through pain, discomfort, and worry by going within. Now if I could just get myself to sit still for longer than ten minutes to medititate…
